Welcome to the Pew Research Center For The People & The Press data archive. This page contains links to the Center's survey data which are currently available on the web. Survey data are released six months after the reports are issued and are posted on the web as quickly as possible. If the information you are interested in is more than six months old but is not here, please contact the Pew Research Center.

We are pleased to provide our raw data to scholars for their own research. We hope it will be useful in furthering our collective understanding about public opinion today. The Center's staff is available to answer questions and to provide limited assistance in importing and analyzing the data. But we strongly recommend that only experienced analysts who are familiar with large SPSS and ASCII data files attempt to download these datasets.

Datasets are identified by report title, the survey name on the questionnaire accompanying each report, and report release date. To learn more about the survey and the sample used for each dataset, consult the individual reports at people-press.org/reports/.

More recent Pew Research Center data are stored as SPSS .sav files, while older Pew Research Center data are stored as ASCII text files using a fixed format. For most ASCII surveys, a layout file lists the card(s) and column(s) in which each variable is located, as well the response values and corresponding response labels. For other ASCII surveys, the layout file lists only the variable locations, and a separate quest.lay file provides the response variables and labels. When applicable, additional files are included that provide the response values and labels for open-ended questions. A complete questionnaire file and a readme file are also included.

All data files include a weight variable that should be used in analysis and is identified in the layout or readme file.

The dataset, layout and questionnaire files are all included in a single compressed archive file (.zip file) that may be downloaded and saved on your computer. Software for decompressing archive files is available at download.com and on many freeware/shareware sites on the web.

All manuscripts, articles, books, and other papers and publications using Center data should reference the Pew Research Center for The People & The Press as the source of the data, and should acknowledge that the Center bears no responsibility for the interpretations presented or conclusions reached based on analysis of the data.
